Tesla Ceramic Coating in Scarborough: What Model 3 and Model Y Owners Need to Know

Teslas are one of the most common vehicles we ceramic coat at ACR Detailing, and for a specific reason: Tesla factory paint is notoriously thin and soft. Rock chips, swirl marks, and clear coat damage appear on new Teslas faster than on almost any other manufacturer's vehicles. If you drive a Model 3, Model Y, Model S, or Model X in Scarborough, a professional ceramic coating — often paired with paint protection film on the front end — is one of the most practical investments you can make.

This post explains why Tesla paint is different, what a proper Tesla ceramic coating involves, and what it costs at ACR Detailing in Scarborough.

Why Tesla Paint Is Different

Tesla uses a water-based, environmentally-friendly paint process at its Fremont and Shanghai factories. The result is paint that is substantially softer and thinner than what you'd find on a comparable BMW, Mercedes, or Lexus. Several independent paint depth measurements have shown Tesla clear coat at 80–120 microns, versus 150–180 microns on most traditional German and Japanese vehicles.

Softer paint means three things:

1. Faster swirl formation. Automatic car washes, improper washing technique, and even drying towels cause visible swirl marks within weeks. 2. Faster rock chip damage. Highway driving — the 401, 404, 407 ETR — produces rock chips that penetrate deeper into Tesla paint than on harder factory finishes. 3. Faster oxidation and fading. UV exposure degrades Tesla clear coat sooner than comparable vehicles, particularly on pearl white and solid black (the two colours most at risk).

Tesla has acknowledged the issue publicly. The Model 3 Service Center bulletins specifically recommend avoiding automatic car washes. Tesla's own owner's manual warns against pressure washers and recommends hand washing with a pH-neutral shampoo — which is unusual manufacturer guidance.

Why Ceramic Coating Solves the Problem

A professional-grade ceramic coating creates a sacrificial layer of silicon dioxide (SiO2) bonded permanently to the factory clear coat. Any minor scratches, swirls, or wash marring happen to the coating, not the paint underneath. For Tesla owners, this is exactly what the paint needs.

Beyond protecting the clear coat itself, ceramic coating:

  • Repels water and dirt — hydrophobic surface means salt, road film, and bird droppings release easily instead of etching into the paint
  • Blocks UV — reduces clear coat oxidation and fade, particularly on pearl white
  • Simplifies washing — a ceramic-coated Tesla rinses clean with soap and water; no rubbing, no compound residue
  • Enhances depth and gloss — pearl white and multicoat red finishes look noticeably deeper under coating
  • Lasts 3–7+ years depending on tier — far outlasting any wax or sealant

The Right Tesla Coating Package

At ACR Detailing, the most common Tesla package is:

1. Paint correction. Almost every Tesla we coat has visible swirl marks, even new ones delivered days earlier from the factory. We do a one- or two-stage correction to eliminate these before coating. Coating over swirls locks them in permanently, so this step isn't optional.

2. Ceramic coating. Our Gold tier ($900) or Platinum tier ($1,300) are the most common choices for Teslas. The Gold tier gives 5 years of coating durability. The Platinum tier uses a multi-layer professional-grade coating that can last 5–14 years on a well-maintained vehicle and includes wheel, trim, and glass coating.

3. Paint protection film (PPF) on the front end. For Tesla owners who commute on the 401 or highway daily, we strongly recommend PPF on at least the front bumper, hood leading edge, and fenders. This is the only way to physically block rock chips — even the best ceramic coating will not stop a 110 km/h gravel impact. Full-front PPF on a Model 3 or Model Y typically runs $1,800–$2,800 depending on coverage.

4. Ceramic window tint. Teslas have large glass surfaces — particularly the Model Y panoramic roof — and ceramic tint dramatically improves cabin cooling and reduces UV exposure to interior components. It also doesn't interfere with the Tesla touchscreen, key card, or any sensor.

What a Tesla Coating Looks Like Step by Step

Every Tesla ceramic coating at ACR Detailing takes 2 to 3 days:

Day 1: Vehicle check-in, full exterior wash, iron decontamination spray, clay bar treatment, panel-by-panel paint inspection under professional lighting. We mark every defect we find and agree on the correction scope before starting.

Day 2: Multi-stage paint correction. One or two polishing stages depending on paint condition, followed by an IPA (isopropyl alcohol) wipe down to remove all polish residue. This leaves the clear coat clean and bondable — critical for coating adhesion.

Day 3: Ceramic coating application panel by panel in a controlled-environment bay. Each section is wiped down immediately after application and inspected under high-intensity lighting. The coating requires 24 hours to initial-cure and 7 days to fully harden.

We provide detailed aftercare instructions and follow up with a one-week check-in.

Pricing for Tesla Ceramic Coating in Scarborough

At ACR Detailing, Tesla ceramic coating starts from:

  • Model 3 or Model Y (Silver tier, 3 years): $500+ with paint correction
  • Model 3 or Model Y (Gold tier, 5 years): $900+ with paint correction
  • Model 3 or Model Y (Platinum tier, 5–14 years): $1,300+ with full correction and wheel/trim/glass coating
  • Model S or Model X: slightly higher due to surface area; Gold tier typically $1,000+

All pricing is starting from — final quote depends on paint condition and correction required. For new-delivery Teslas (under 500 km), correction is usually minimal and pricing stays at the starting tier.

Why Scarborough Tesla Owners Choose ACR

Scarborough Tesla ownership is growing rapidly — the Queensway, Kingston Road, and Sheppard Supercharger stations see steady daily traffic. Most Tesla owners in Scarborough bought their vehicle specifically to keep for 5–10 years, which makes paint protection a much more obvious investment than it is for a three-year lease. Ceramic coating pays for itself in paint preservation, resale value, and the weekly time saved not scrubbing road salt off pearl white panels.

We've coated Model 3 Performance, Model Y Long Range, Model S Plaid, and Model X Plaid vehicles for Scarborough, North York, and Markham owners. Every one of them gets the same process: thorough correction, controlled-environment application, and a full walkthrough of coating care.
