Paint correction is the process of mechanically leveling the clear coat surface of your vehicle to remove swirl marks, fine scratches, water spots, oxidation, and other paint defects. It is performed using professional dual-action or rotary machine polishers combined with cutting compounds and polishing pads of varying aggressiveness.
Most vehicle paint looks flawless from a distance but reveals a web of fine circular scratches — known as swirl marks — when inspected under direct lighting. These are caused by automated car washes, improper washing technique, dry wiping, and general contact over time. Oxidation from UV exposure adds a further layer of dullness. Paint correction addresses all of this systematically.
The process works by carefully removing a controlled amount of the clear coat to bring the surface down to below the defect level — eliminating the scratch rather than filling it. The result is a surface that is optically flat, meaning light reflects off it uniformly in all directions, producing the deep, mirror-like gloss associated with a truly flawless paint job.
At ACR Detailing, every paint correction begins with a thorough assessment using paint depth gauges and high-intensity lighting. This tells us how much clear coat is available to work with and what stage of correction is appropriate. We never polish more than necessary — protecting your long-term paint health while delivering the best possible result.
A correctly executed paint correction transforms the entire visual presence of a vehicle — inside and out, in any lighting condition.
Automated car washes and improper washing technique leave thousands of fine circular scratches in your paint. Machine polishing levels these out, restoring a clear, reflection-true surface.
Light to moderate scratches that haven't broken through to the primer layer can be fully removed through multi-stage machine polishing — no respray, no fillers.
UV exposure causes clear coat to oxidize, turning hazy, chalky, or dull. Paint correction chemically and mechanically removes oxidized material to reveal fresh, vibrant paint beneath.
After a full multi-stage correction and final polish, the paint achieves a depth and reflectivity that surpasses the original factory finish — the true benchmark of professional detailing.
All packages include a multi-step hand wash, paint decontamination with iron removal and clay-bar treatment, surface preparation, and final protection with ceramic coating or silica sealant.

Methodical, measured, and verified at every stage — our process is designed to deliver maximum correction safely.
We inspect the paint under high-intensity lighting and with a paint depth gauge to measure clear coat thickness and identify all defects — swirls, scratches, water spots, oxidation, and holograms.
The vehicle receives a thorough two-bucket wash, iron decontamination spray, and clay bar treatment to remove all bonded surface contamination that could cause scratching during polishing.
A cutting compound and wool or cutting pad is used to level the clear coat surface. This stage removes the most significant defects — deep scratches, heavy swirls, and oxidation.
Progressively finer polishes and finishing pads refine the surface further, removing any marring left by the cut stage and bringing the paint to a high-gloss, swirl-free finish.
The completed correction is inspected under multiple light sources and angles to confirm all defects are addressed. Paint depth readings are recorded before and after to document results.
Most Scarborough vehicles arrive at ACR Detailing with the same paint profile: a mesh of fine swirl marks from automatic tunnel washes along Kingston Rd and Lawrence East, random deeper scratches from parking-lot contact at Pacific Mall and STC, water-etching from hard-water spotting, and a general dulling of the clear coat from 4–6 years of Ontario winters. Paint correction is the process that reverses all of that — using machine polishers and abrasive compounds to level the clear coat and restore the true reflection depth underneath.
Every correction starts with a thickness reading on the clear coat to confirm there is material safe to remove. From there, we choose between a 1-stage refinement (best for newer daily drivers with light defects), a 2-stage cut-and-polish (for moderate swirling and scratches that catch a fingernail), or a full 3-stage correction (for heavily neglected or older paint requiring maximum defect removal). Every stage is done by hand with a variable-speed orbital or rotary polisher, in a temperature-controlled bay at 29 Oakmeadow Blvd.
Paint correction is also the mandatory first step before any ceramic coating installation — coating over uncorrected swirls will permanently lock those defects in under a 2–5 year finish. We serve Agincourt, Malvern, Guildwood, Birch Cliff, Woburn, Wexford, and every other Scarborough neighbourhood. Call (647) 963-5524 for a condition assessment and accurate time estimate.
Paint correction restores your clear coat to its best condition. Paint protection film keeps it there. PPF absorbs rock chips and road debris so your freshly corrected paint stays flawless for years. Build a custom PPF package with our interactive configurator.

Automatic car washes
The spinning brush and recycled water at automatic washes on Lawrence, Markham Road, and Kingston Road leave visible swirl marks within a handful of visits. Machine polishing removes them — and we'll show you how to maintain the finish without a repeat.
Winter salt etching
Road salt that sits on paint for days at a time etches the clear coat unevenly, producing the cloudy "white tide line" look around rocker panels and wheel arches. Correction cuts through the etched layer to reveal fresh clear coat underneath.
Sun oxidation
Hoods and roofs exposed to direct summer sun in open Scarborough lots develop oxidation and dullness after 5–7 years. A two-stage correction brings back depth and prepares the paint for ceramic coating — protection that stops the cycle from restarting.
